Talk2Me Peer Supporter Training Certificate Programme

A strategic initiative designed to address the critical mental health needs of youth in Hong Kong.

According to KELY’s Youth Mental Health Survey 2022, a significant 60% of young individuals do not seek help when facing mental health challenges. Furthermore, and 62% of youth aged 14-24 prefer to turn to their peers when in need of support. In response, the Talk2Me programme, established in 2014, was enhanced to integrate traditional peer support, aiming to strengthen peer-to-peer support networks.

About the Programme

The training consists of 10 hours of in-person instruction, suited for students in different levels of studies, with an enrollment of 15-20 participants. The curriculum includes five modules delivered through interactive presentations, activities, role-playing, group discussions, and case studies.

  • Enhance Knowledge: Improve understanding of mental health and the common challenges faced by youth in Hong Kong.
  • Equip Students: Develop peer support skills among participants.
  • Improve Ability and Confidence: Boost participants' confidence and ability to recognize and respond to peer issues.
  • Increase Support Encouragement: Enhance the ability of participants to encourage peers to seek help.
  • Build Positive Support Networks: Establish a supportive community for participants and their peers.

The five modules are:

  • Knowledge on common youth challenges: This includes youth mental health, stress, drugs and alcohol, relationships and boundaries, and bullying. As peer support ambassadors, students will also learn how to address these challenges.

  • Understanding yourself and others: This module gives students the opportunity for self-reflection, helping them build self-awareness and emotional awareness.

  • Essential skills for peer support: This establishes the foundation for peer support and equips students with necessary skills, including active listening techniques, how to set boundaries in relationships, and identifying risks.

  • Self-Care: Understanding the importance of taking care of oneself before being able to support others.

  • Channels for help-seeking: This enables students to guide and encourage peers to seek professional support services when needed.

Testimonials

The Talk2Me Peer Supporter Training Certificate Programme has been inspiring for our students. It has equipped them with invaluable peer support skills and a deeper understanding of mental health challenges. Through this programme, students have not only learnt to be better friends but also to take care of themselves. This engaging and interactive programme has made a positive impact on their lives, enabling them to provide meaningful support to their peers. We highly recommend Talk2Me for any school seeking to empower students with essential life skills on mental wellness.

I liked that we did both theoretical and practical activities as it helps you to understand the situation better. It does take time to process it but it was very fruitful to have a mix of activities to help with my learning.
