Lived Experience of Abi

A mental health nursing student struggling with depression

Key Takeaways from Abi

1. The struggle is real.

People with mental health struggles may not reveal their worst in front of people. Even if they seem cheerful and living a normal life, it does not mean that they are okay.

Therefore, avoid telling them they are just overthinking, or try to spread positivity that would make them feel confused, minimized and not understood.

2. Words of encouragement might not be the best thing to say.

People with mental health struggles are probably trying their best to manage and improve their situation. A feeling of powerlessness may arise, thinking they did not put enough effort in managing with their situation when people say something like “You can do better if you try harder!”

3. Support can be simply being there.

Oftentimes, people are not looking for solutions nor false hope. The greatest support is accompaniment and simply being by their side without saying empty words.

Whatever happened in the past,
however painful it was,
whatever she had gone through,
I AM HERE.
