Addiction: a vicious cycle that we can break

We may be exposed to all kinds of temptations - from drugs and alcohol to addictive social media habits. But do you know the science behind how addiction takes hold?

It's called the addiction cycle, and it's a vicious loop that can be really hard to break:

1. Intoxication 🥤

This is when the userfirst experiences the rewarding effects of substance use - the euphoria, and the reduced anxiety. Their brain's reward system gets hooked, reinforcing the addictive behaviour.

2. Withdrawal 😣

Once the user stops using the addictive substance, they will experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms like sleep issues, pain, dysphoria etc.. The brain's reward system is diminished and the stress systems are heightened, driving the user to use the addictive substance again to escape the "low" feelings.

3. Preoccupation 🤯

Finally, the user becomes preoccupied with obtaining and using the substance again. Their ability to make good decisions and control their impulses is compromised as their brain is affected.

Addiction can be a closed circle that repeats over and over, but people can also take charge and break free from this loop - with support and determination. Remember - we are the master of our own mind and body - don’t let addiction control our lives.
