This Giving Tuesday, Empower HK’s Youth for a Brighter Future

Giving Tuesday is a global movement that encourages generosity and charitable giving, held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It is a day where we are all encouraged to give back to our community and address the needs of our society. As part of this global day of generosity, your support can help us provide critical resources and opportunities to young people, empowering them to overcome challenges and thrive in today’s demanding world.

The Needs of Youth in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s young people face immense challenges. Academic stress, family expectations, and financial pressures have left many feeling overwhelmed. Surveys reveal that 1 in 3 young people in Hong Kong experience symptoms of anxiety or depression, yet the stigma around mental health often prevents them from seeking help.

Substance use is also a growing concern, with some young people turning to drugs or alcohol to cope with stress. The recent surge of space oil usage is causing widespread concern over whether our young people have enough knowledge to identify what risks unknown substances can cause to the body. Without education and prevention, these behaviours can have lasting consequences.

For disadvantaged youth, the situation is even more difficult. Young people from low-income families or ethnic minority backgrounds face limited access to resources and opportunities, leaving them uncertain about their future.

The reality today is stark — many young people in Hong Kong are struggling. We need to give them the tools to minimise the effects of risky behaviours.

How KELY Makes a Difference for Youth

For over 30 years, KELY has been equipping youth with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities they need to reach their full potential. Our peer support model creates a safe, inclusive environment where young people can learn, grow, and thrive, as testified by our alumni. We believe that early intervention is key.

Our work is rooted in the belief that community is stronger when young people support each other. By training youth to become peer leaders, we create a ripple effect that extends far beyond individual participants, fostering a culture of compassion and resilience across Hong Kong. We focus on three key areas: Mental Health & Wellbeing, Drug & Alcohol Awareness, and Positive Youth Development. As the pressures on youth in Hong Kong grow, so does the urgency of our work.
