Vincent Yeung - From Listening to Leading

Many adults often complain that today’s youth are failing to communicate properly or connect deeply with others. Yet, having worked closely with different school students, I find this simply isn’t true. Despite concerns that technology distances us, humans remain social creatures who crave connection and emotional support. While the ways Gen Z fosters these bonds may have changed, the need to be heard and understood remains as strong as ever.

Back in my school days, long, late night phone calls were a common way for friends to share their secrets and struggles. Whether it was about romance, family challenges, or big dreams for the future, I found myself spending hours simply listening. At the time, I wondered why so many chose to confide in me, as I wasn’t necessarily anyone’s closest friend. Over time, I realised that what I had was a gift: empathetic listening. More importantly, I learned that this is not just an innate ability but a skill that can be nurtured and developed.

What started as informal conversations with friends gradually grew into a more intentional role. I began offering peer support at work, becoming someone whom colleagues could turn to during stressful or uncertain times. This deepened my commitment to mental health, leading me to volunteer for crisis hotlines and eventually train others in the art of empathetic listening and peer support.

Of course, being a listener doesn’t mean I was immune to life’s challenges. During some of the most difficult periods, when I struggled with intense work pressure, sleepless nights, and feelings of overwhelm, I found myself in need of support too. It was the presence of a few compassionate people who listened without judgment, validated my feelings, and simply held space for me that made a real difference. Sometimes, just having a safe space to express emotions can lighten the burden and help us find clarity and strength.

Empathetic listening is more than just a way to support others. It is a vital life skill that enriches both personal and professional relationships.
